It was another morning of difficult conditions fuelled by the cold and heavy rain, particularly in the second half. The game started slowly, and it was abundantly clear that the Divas were still waking somewhat from having a few weeks off. It was scrappy from both teams with neither able to take a stranglehold of the game. There were a few changes for the Divas as a result of various people being away. Holly, our usual keeper, started up front for her outfield debut, Niamh slotted in really well into defence, and Daisy started in goal, complete with the full goalkeepers kit (which looked awesome!).
Despite a sluggish first half, it was the Divas who took the lead with Khloee, our monster in the middle of the park, squeezing the ball home from a tight angle.
Half time and the Divas led 1-0. However, it was a fairly even first half. Some honest words were said at half time by the coaches, who weren’t impressed with the work rate in some areas.
The second half was much of the same, with neither side controlling the game. The Divas did have several chances, with Nyah hitting the foot of the post, and Crawley too looked threatening on the break as they found gaps in our defence and their pace was causing us problems. It was Crawley who got the next all important goal to level it up at 1-1, and that’s how the game ended.
Again, some words were had at the end of the game, and it was refreshing to hear some of the girls come off and honestly say ‘that half was worse than the first’. That’s the kind of honest talk we want in order to improve. And let’s look at it this way, we didn’t play our best and still drew 1-1. The girls have come a long, long way in such a short space of time and sometimes it’s easy to forget that. It wasn’t that long ago we were getting beaten heavily by some sides. Now we are holding our own even when not at our best. So well done girls. Keep up the amazing work and good things will happen.
